Nail Care After Intense Sun Exposure
How to Restore and Nourish Your Nails
Sun-kissed skin might be the goal, but your nails and cuticles need a little extra love after long days in the sun. Just like your hair or skin, UV rays, saltwater, and heat can leave nails dry, brittle, or discoloured - especially if you’ve been rocking a UV gel polish manicure.
Here’s how to bring your nails back to life after a sun-soaked holiday.
What Happens to Nails in the Sun?
Even though your nails don’t burn like your skin, they’re still affected by:
-
UV exposure - which can weaken the nail plate and cause fading or discolouration in polish.
-
Saltwater & chlorine - both dehydrate the nail and surrounding skin.
-
High temperatures - accelerate moisture loss, especially around the cuticles.
-
Sand & friction - rough up the nail surface, especially around the edges.

5-Step Post-Sun Nail Recovery Routine
1. Remove old UV gel polish gently
Avoid peeling or picking at UV gel polish. Use Semilac acetone remover and a soak-off method to protect the nail plate from damage.
2. Hydrate like crazy
Apply cuticle oil daily - we recommend Semilac’s Nail & Cuticle Elixir with keratin or macadamia oil. Massage into nails and skin around them.
3. Replenish moisture
Use a nourishing hand and foot cream after sun exposure, especially one rich in vitamin E, shea butter, or aloe vera.
4. Let your nails breathe
After removing UV gel polish, take a short break (2–4 days) to let your nails recover before reapplying. During this time, buff lightly and apply a clear nail strengthener.
5. Protect your hands going forward
Yes, use SPF on your hands - especially the backs and around the cuticles. If you're applying UV gel polish outside, avoid direct sunlight during application to prevent premature curing.

Extra Tips for After-Holidays Nail Health
-
Drink more water - dehydration shows up in your nails too.
-
File gently - don’t use metal files or saw back and forth.
-
Avoid cutting cuticles - push them back with a soft tool instead.
-
Add a biotin supplement (consult your GP) for long-term strength.
Healthy Nails Are Happy Nails
Taking care of your nails post-sun is just as important as applying that SPF. A little extra attention will keep your Semilac manicures looking flawless longer, and your natural nails in their best condition - even after the hottest summer adventures.
