Want to know how to do gel polish nails? Take a look at our step-by-step guide, and you’ll see it’s not as difficult as you might think. With us, doing a gel polish manicure is pure pleasure! You just need to get the right products.
STEP 1
Prepare the nails and cuticles. Shape your nails to your desired look using a Semilac straight file. Then gently push back the cuticles with a wooden stick, and carefully remove any remaining excess cuticle with a cuticle nipper. Buff the nail plate lightly with a Semilac Quality polishing block, and brush away any dust using a soft brush.After thoroughly dusting the entire nail plate, degrease it with a lint-free wipe soaked in Semilac Nail Cleaner. If necessary, apply a non-acid primer to improve the adhesion of the gel polish. Wait a few seconds for the primer to evaporate, then proceed to apply the base coat.
STEP 2
Apply a thin layer of your chosen Semilac base coat over the entire nail, ensuring you also seal the free edge. Cure it under a lamp.Be mindful of the curing time, as this depends on both the type of base coat and the lamp you’re using. You can find specific curing times for each product on the Semilac website at semilac.co.uk.
STEP 3
Next, apply a thin layer of Semilac gel polish, ensuring you also seal the free edge of the nail, and cure it under the lamp. After curing, apply a second thin layer of gel polish to deepen the colour, and cure it again under a UV or LED lamp. How long should you cure each layer? The curing time depends on both the specific gel polish colour and the type of lamp you’re using — with LED lamps often reducing the time to as little as 30 seconds per layer!
STEP 4
Apply your chosen top coat over the properly cured gel polish layer, taking care to seal the free edge of the nail and avoid flooding the cuticles. Cure it under the lamp. If you’re using Semilac Top or Semilac Top Mat, remove the dispersion layer with a lint-free wipe soaked in Semilac Nail Cleaner. The top coat should not feel sticky. Once you’ve finished your manicure, apply cuticle oil and use hand cream to nourish and firm the skin on your hands.

REMOVING GEL POLISH STEP BY STEP
When you notice visible regrowth at the base of your nails, it’s a sign that it’s time to remove your gel polish.We’ll show you how to do this properly, without causing damage to your nails.
STEP 1
Gently buff the top layer of your manicure using, for example, a Semilac Quality 100/180 straight file.
STEP 2
Next, saturate Semilac Remover Wraps with Semilac acetone or gel polish remover. Wrap each finger quickly and securely in aluminium foil and leave for around 10–15 minutes.
STEP 3
Gently remove the softened gel polish using a wooden stick or a Semilac Pusher. Finally, lightly smooth the nail surface with a Semilac Quality polishing block.
