The short version
What changed, in thirty seconds
TPO is a photoinitiator, the ingredient that makes gel cure under a lamp. It was reclassified under EU chemical rules, which triggers an automatic ban in cosmetics. Gel manicures are not being banned. One ingredient is being replaced.
Great Britain has two dates, and they do not mean the same thing.
1 Sept 2025
EU ban takes effect
TPO prohibited in cosmetics across the EU. Semilac had already reformulated.
Today
Every product on this page is TPO-free
No change to cure time, wear or lamp.

Great Britain rules start
See the full explainer for what this means for salons and existing stock.
Also looking for HEMA-free? TPO and HEMA are different ingredients doing different jobs, and only TPO is being prohibited. Many of the products on this page are free from both.
TPO-free gel polish, answered
Do I need to throw away the gel polish I already own?
No. The rules apply to what can be sold and supplied, not to what you already own. The full explainer covers existing stock in detail.
Can my salon still use the stock it has?
This is the question with the most nuance, because the two Great Britain dates do different jobs. The full explainer walks through it properly.
Does TPO-free cure differently?
No. 30 to 60 seconds in a standard UV or LED lamp, exactly as before. No new equipment and no change to your routine.
Is the colour or the wear any different?
No. Same pigments, same shine, same wear. The photoinitiator is swapped and nothing else about the finish changes.
Is TPO-free the same as HEMA-free?
No, they are different ingredients doing different jobs, and only TPO is being prohibited. Many Semilac products are free from both.
